Twins to skip Francisco Liriano's turn in rotation this week

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
The Twins will skip struggling starting pitcher Francisco Liriano's turn in the rotation this week. He pitched Sunday against the Rays and won't again see game action until May 1, as the Twins are using an off-day to temporarily shorten to a four-man rotation.

"It's about being able to relax on the mound, and he knows that," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said (MLB.com). "He actually says he has confidence, but he'll tell you straight out that when he gets men out there, he starts spinning 'em. So he's got to be able to control that. It's a work in progress. We're letting him take a step back and relax a little bit."

Liriano, 28, is 0-3 with an 11.02 ERA and 2.33 WHIP in four starts. He leads the majors with 20 earned runs allowed and leads the AL with 13 walks. He's getting hit hard (13.8 hits per nine innings) and having control problems. Obviously, that's a pretty awful combination.
