Blue Jays' Dustin McGowan shut down with shoulder inflammation

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
Blue Jays pitcher Dustin McGowan has been shut down from baseball activities with shoulder inflammation. Yeah, that sounds bad, especially for a guy with McGowan's injury history, but it gets worse. McGowan has visited Dr. James Andrews.

Combine McGowan's injury history with a visit to Dr. Andrews and obviously it's easy to fear the worst. The Blue Jays said no structural damage was reported in the visit, but it's still concerning given that it's McGowan.

McGowan, 30, battled back to make four starts for the Blue Jays last season after having not appeared with the club since 2008, and it was mainly shoulder issues that kept him off the field. There was a labrum injury and then a rotator cuff issue with a knee surgery thrown in -- between the two shoulder injuries.

It was a feel-good story when McGowan returned to the Blue Jays last season, finally looking healthy. Unfortunately, he seems like a Mark Prior type that is destined to just never stay healthy. Hopefully this assertion is proven incorrect and this news is just a minor setback.
