Rays sign Hideki Matsui to minor-league deal

The Rays have officially signed Hideki Matsui to a minor-league contract, the team announced on Monday. Matsui, 37, will report to extended spring training in Charlotte County, Fla., on Wednesday.

Matsui, who will be 38 in June, hit .251/.321/.375 with 12 home runs for the A's last season and is a career .285/.363/.467 hitter in nine seasons in the United States. The Japanese outfielder and DH spent his first seven seasons with the Yankees before moving to the Angles in 2010 and the A's last season.

It's interesting that he's listed as both an outfielder and DH by the Rays in their release. Last season he started 27 games in left field and 108 as the team's DH. He played just 18 games in the field in 2010 and none in 2009.
