Jim Thome hits DL with strained back

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
The Phillies have announced that first baseman/pinch hitter Jim Thome has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back. Catcher Erik Kratz has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley as a corresponding move.

It has been a rough return to Philly for the 41-year-old Thome. The future Hall of Famer has just two hits in 18 at-bats, and both were singles. So his triple slash line is .111/.238/.111. He's north of 40, yes, but he had an .838 OPS with 15 homers and 50 RBI in just 93 games last season for the Twins and Indians.

Thome signed a one-year deal with the Phillies this past offseason with the hopes of getting that elusive World Series ring. He's played in two World Series -- and nine different postseasons -- but never won it all.

Kratz, 31, is just depth behind the plate. He is hitting .294/.333/.549 with three homers and nine RBI in Triple-A. He has a career .150/.190/.175 line in 42 major-league plate appearances.
