Chris Iannetta to undergo wrist surgery, miss six to eight weeks

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
As if the Angels weren't off to a rough enough start to the 2012 season, they've now lost their catcher for up to two months. Chris Iannetta will undergo surgery on his right wrist, the club announced Thursday afternoon via press release. The expected recovery is six to eight weeks.

According to the release, Iannetta injured the wrist during Jered Weaver's no-hitter last week.

Iannetta, 29, was acquired by the Angels this past offseason in a trade for pitcher Tyler Chatwood. Iannetta is hitting .197/.312/.394 with three homers, nine RBI and 10 runs this season. He may have a low average, but he walks a lot and has good power, so his OPS usually hovers around the league average (102 OPS-plus this season), which is good for a catcher.

With Iannetta down, Bobby Wilson is next in line to take over. A corresponding move to Iannetta being placed on the DL has not yet been announced, but Hank Conger isn't yet an option because he's on the minor-league disabled list.
