Adrian Gonzalez guarantees Thursday home run

Adrian Gonzalez

Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez had an unfortunate night on Wednesday.

His team saw its five-game winning streak snapped by the rival Rays, and Gonzalez went 0-for-4 at the plate with two strikeouts and two runners left on base. Gonzalez also didn't care much for the umpiring. In particular, Gonzalez was miffed about Hunter Wendelstedt's strike zone during his final at-bat.

Rather than throw his helmet, however, Gonzalez threw around the bravado. After he was done talking about the umpiring, Gonzalez was asked about his ongoing power outage this season. "I'll start hitting home runs," Gonzalez told WEEI. "I'll hit a home run tomorrow."

Teammate David Ortiz, for one, liked what he heard. "Good," Ortiz said of Gonzalez's guarantee. "That's good stuff. I can't wait. I know my pinata killer is going to be fine. I've got money on him. I've got money on the killer because I know that pinata at some point is going to have to drop down."

For what it's worth, the Red Sox will oppose struggling Rays rookie lefty Matt Moore, against whom Gonzalez, in six career plate appearances, is hitting .200/.333/.200 with no homers. It's also worth noting that, throughout his career, Gonzalez has hit just 48 of his 149 home runs against left-handers, and he also slugs 108 points lower against lefties than he does against the opposite side.

That adds up to a tall order for a certain pinata killer.
