One-game wild-card round of playoffs to air on TBS

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
Thursday, Major League Baseball issued a press release to announce that TBS will air the two wild-card games. As most of us know by now, 2012 will see a bit of a "play-in" playoff game in each league, with the top two non-division winners playing one game to advance to the divisional round of the playoffs. And TBS will broadcast them, in addition to any tiebreaker games that might be necessary.

Expanded playoffs
Typically, when the network is chosen for a sporting event, the immediate reaction is to judge based upon the announcers. The four national networks that broadcast baseball are TBS, ESPN, Fox and MLB Network. So it's time to insert the commentary about being free from Joe Buck and Tim McCarver -- at least for these games. Fox still has the World Series and one LCS.

Also of note: MLB Network will broadcast two division series games in each of the next two years.

“The new format will create two compelling Wild Card match-ups for fans that will begin our Postseason with unprecedented pressure and implications,” said commissioner Bud Selig in a statement. “We are confident that TBS will provide outstanding coverage and promotion of the games. I am also very pleased that this arrangement allows for MLB Network to air Postseason games for the first time. MLB Network has done a remarkable job with its live game coverage and I am certain that its extraordinary work will continue as it produces Postseason games.”
