Ricketts family, Cubs seek distance from anti-Obama campaign

The Ricketts family, who own the Chicago Cubs, are in damage control after a New York Times piece has linked Joe Ricketts, father of Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, to a rather ugly attack campaign against President Obama.

The Times reported that the elder Ricketts was considering one particular $10-million Super-PAC proposal entitled, "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: The Ricketts Plan to End His Spending for Good." Here's one particular thrust of the plan:
The group suggested hiring as a spokesman an “extremely literate conservative African-American” who can argue that Mr. Obama misled the nation by presenting himself as what the proposal calls a “metrosexual, black Abe Lincoln.”
As the Chicago Tribune notes, the timing of the story is particularly inconvenient for the Ricketts family, as they try to persuade the city of Chicago to hand over tax dollars in order to refurbish Wrigley Field. The mayor of Chicago is, of course, Rahm Emanuel, who served as President Obama's first chief of staff. And indeed, Mayor Emanuel expressed his unhappiness with the reported particulars. All of those considerations led Tom Ricketts to release a statement:
“As chairman of the Chicago Cubs, I repudiate any return to racially divisive issues in this year's presidential campaign or in any setting -- like my father has,” Tom Ricketts said in the statement. “I shall have no further comment on this or any other election year political issue. My full-time focus is on making the Chicago Cubs a World Series champion preserving Wrigley Field and making the Chicago Cubs a great corporate citizen.”
Regardless of what you think about the banalities of electoral politics, one possible solution is for the Ricketts family and the Cubs to, you know, pay for their own place of business.
