Michael Morse could return ahead of schedule

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer
Michael Morse

Some good news for the injury-blighted Nationals: Outfielder Michael Morse, who's yet to play this season because of a torn lat, could be actived by June 1.

Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports that Morse hopes to be activated in time for the homestand that begins June 1, which would return him to the roster a week ahead of schedule. Morse will go to extended spring training next week and then could see action in a minor-league game toward the end of the month. Barring setback, he'd be ready at that point.

While the Nats are enjoying a fine season thus far, they could certainly use the help on offense. Washington presently ranks 12th in the NL in runs scored, and Morse is coming off a season in which he was easily the team's top producer (.303/.360/.550 with 31 homers in 2011).
