Jim Leyland: Justin Verlander's 'a freak show'

Justin Verlander

A day after Justin Verlander's one-hitter against the Pirates, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was no less impressed.

"Electric was what you saw last night," Leyland told reporters, including MLive.com. "I mean, you talk about a masterpiece -- that's taking it to a different level. That's freaky [stuff]."

Leyland said it was not only the best performance he'd seen from Verlander, it was the best pitched game he'd ever seen -- and this is coming from a man who has managed 3,214 games in the big leagues after Friday's game.

"Like I said, that's a freak show," Leyland said (MLive.com). "I hate to term it like that, it'll probably get me in trouble, but that's a freak show. That was unbelievable to me, watching that."

Verlander struck out 12 batters, walked two, and at one time retired 18 straight batters. He didn't give up a hit until Josh Harrison's one-out single in the ninth inning. Verlander has two no-hitters under his belt, but -- as Kate Upton will tell you -- no perfect games.

For the record, Nolan Ryan not only had seven no-hitters, but 12 one-hitters in his career.
