Cody Ross to DL with broken foot

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer
Cody Ross

The carnage grows in Boston: now comes word that outfielder Cody Ross has a fractured bone in his left foot and has been placed on the DL.

The Boston Herald reports that although an X-ray showed no break, a subsequent MRI did. As for a timetable, Scott Lauber of the Herald tweets that the break is non-displaced, which means it should heal without surgery. If a second opinion affirms that, then Ross's timetable would likely be six to eight weeks.

The bad news for the Sox is that Ross, in addition to seeing time at all three outfield positions, is hitting a productive .271/.349/.534 and is on pace for 32 homers this season. The worse news is that Ross becomes the sixth Boston outfielder on the disabled list. As a consequence, the Red Sox starting outfield will likely consist of Marlon Byrd, Daniel Nava and Ryan Kalish.

Ross's injury does, however, mean that Will Middlebrooks should be able to remain on the active roster even after Kevin Youkilis returns. So that's ... something.
