The new PED: Having a child

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond is in the middle of a power surge. With a home run Monday night, he now has seven on the season, including five in the month of May. He only hit eight homers all of last season and his career-high mark is 10. The most he's ever hit in a professional season is 13, which he did in High-A ball back in 2007. So what's going on?

“Daddy strength,” said Desmond, whose son turned one at the end of April (via Nationals Journal). “They say when you have a kid, you get stronger. Thanks, Grayson.”

Desmond's hitting 12.7 percent of his fly balls over the fence, and his career HR/FB mark is 8.5 percent. So he's definitely muscling up so far this season. If he keeps it up, maybe his surge will cause a baby boom among offensive players.
