Angels place Jered Weaver on 15-day DL

Jered Weaver

Not what the surging Angels needed: Ace Jered Weaver has been forced to the DL because of a lower-back strain and accompanying spasms. Weaver was forced to leave his start on Monday after just 12 pitches, and on Tuesday the team opted to make a roster move.

On the season, Weaver, last year's AL Cy Young runner-up, has a 2.61 ERA (good for third among AL qualifiers) and ranks sixth in the AL in innings pitched.

Garrett Richards will replace him on the roster and in the rotation. Until Richards needs to make a start, though, he's likely to work out of the bullpen. The hard-throwing Richards has a 3.31 ERA across parts of four minor-league seasons. Last season, he posted a 5.79 ERA in 14.0 innings with the Angels.
