Padres shock Toledo quarterback by drafting him in 40th round

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
The talent pool for this year's MLB Draft was said to be pretty shallow. Still, this is surprising: University of Toledo quarterback Terrance Owens was drafted by the Padres in the 40th round.

He hasn't played baseball since he was a freshman in high school.

"I was just surprised," Owens said (toledoblade.com). "Kind of confused, really."

Owens also told the Toledo Blade that his teammates have been "clowning" him for becoming a draftee in a sport he doesn't play.

The thing is, this doesn't sound like a mistake. Check this out, via the Blade:
A foreshadowing of this unusual event happened Sunday when a Padres scout contacted a UT assistant baseball coach to inquire about Owens. The message made its way to football coach Matt Campbell, who used terms like "shocked" and "speechless" to describe his reaction.
Baseball teams drafting football players who don't play baseball isn't without precedent. In a 40-round draft (that used to be 50 rounds, and before that was "unlimited"), it happens. Charlie Ward and Michael Vick are two examples of collegiate quarterbacks drafted by MLB teams despite not being baseball players. Of course, those were transcendent college football talents. Owens has made seven career starts for Toledo, of the MAC. And, again, he hasn't played baseball since he was a freshman in high school, which was 2006.

It's simply a head-scratcher of a pick. Surely there was a college junior or high school senior who actually plays baseball that might have been worthy of a selection and instead was left undrafted. And just in case there are thoughts this pick was worthwhile, here's what Owens said about his "decision" to either sign with the Padres or continue playing football for Toledo:

"I'll be here," Owens said (toledoblade.com). "Next year too."
