Manny Ramirez asks for release, A's oblige

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

Manny Ramirez

Manny Ramirez realized that the A's offered him no path back to major leagues, so the veteran slugger asked for his release on Friday. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets that the organization has granted his request.

And here's a aubsequent Slusser tweet that gets to the heart of the matter:

Ramirez was batting .302 for Triple-A Sacramento, but he'd drawn just five walks in 69 plate appearances, he had no homers, and just three of his 16 hits had gone for extra bases. With that said, Oakland DHs on the season have combined for an OPS of .650, which ranks a lowly 12th among AL squads. It's hard to think Ramirez couldn't have provided at least a slight upgrade.

Our own Danny Knobler passes along this statement from Ramirez's agents:

Manny believes he has demonstrated that he is ready to return to the Major
Leagues. However, given that the Oakland Athletics could not give Manny any
assurance that they plan to promote him in the immediate future he asked for his
release. Manny thanks the A's for providing him with this opportunity.
