Blue Jays' Kyle Drabek to undergo another Tommy John surgery

Kyle Drabek

Blue Jays right-hander Kyle Drabek will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, Blue Jays manager John Farrell told reporters on Monday.

Drabek, 24, was the centerpiece of the deal that send Roy Halladay to the Phillies, along with catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud and outfielder Michael Taylor (now in Oakland). The former first-round pick of the Philies and son of Doug Drabek, Kyle Drabek was 4-7 with a 4.67 ERA in 13 starts for the Blue Jays this season. He left Wednesday's start against the Nationals after the fifth inning and reported hearing a "popping" in the back of his right elbow.

Dr. James Andrews will perform Drabek's surgery in Pensacola, Fla., on Tuesday. Andrews performed the same procedure on Drabek in 2007. Drabek will miss the rest of this season, with his return expected about this time next season.

"Based on the multiple evaluations, I think this was the only option," Farrell said (MLB.com). "So in some ways, because of the extent of the injury, it was pretty much taken out of his hands. And the proper road and really best course of action is to have surgery done, knowing that entails a lengthy rehab and a lot of due diligence and work on his part in the near future here."
