Rays to wear '70s-era faux-back uniforms

By C. Trent Rosecrans | Blogger

So, had the Rays actually existed in 1979, what would their uniforms have looked like? Apparently a lot like the Padres', only with better colors. Oh, and they'd be better than any other in the team's history.

The Rays are hosting a "Turn Back the Clock" game against the Tigers on June 30, and because home whites are boring, the team will wear what is imagined to be a road uniform from 33 years ago -- while the Tigers will wear road grays the team wore from 1972-93.

The Rays' jerseys will be auctioned off on raysbaseball.com after the game with proceeds going to Moffitt Cancer Center and the Rays Baseball Foundation.

Last season the Rays wore the uniforms of the 1951 Tampa Smokers and in the past have also worn the uniforms of the old Tampa Tarpons, St. Petersburg Pelicans, St. Petersburg Pelicans, University of Tampa, and even their original jerseys are part of the Turn Back the Clock promotion.
