Phillies trade Jim Thome to Orioles

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

Jim Thome

The Phillies have traded first baseman Jim Thome to the Orioles, report CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury and FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. CBSSports.com Insiders Jon Heyman and Danny Knobler have confirmed.

Heyman and Knobler also report that 21-year-old minor-league right-hander Kyle Simon (3.96 ERA at High-A Frederick of the Carolina League) and 19-year-old catcher Gabriel Lino (.218/.282/.340 in the Low-A Sally League this season) are headed to the Phillies to complete the deal.

Thome, age 41, is hitting .242/.338/.516 on the season, and, with 609 career home runs to his credit, he's presently tied with Sammy Sosa for seventh place on the all-time list. He'll likely become the primary DH in Baltimore. Oriole designated hitters this season have combined to hit a respectable .258/.349/.439, but Thome will certainly provide more power. As well, Nick Johnson, previously a key part of the O's DH arrangement, is back on the disabled list.

The Orioles also rank near the bottom of the league in slugging percentage against right-handed pitching, so the lefty-swinging Thome should help on that front.

Thome is owed the balance of his $1.25-million contract for 2012. The Orioles say he'll be in uniform on Sunday. In order to make room for Thome on the 40-man roster, the O's have designated lefty Zach Phillips for assignment.
