Matt Kemp names his Home Run Derby team

By C. Trent Rosecrans | Blogger

Matt Kemp

Matt Kemp is on the disabled list, but for now it appears he'll be partaking in the Home Run Derby, even if he's not in the game. He'll be joined on the National League squad by the Cardinals' Carlos Beltran, the Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez and the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton.

The American League team, headed by defending champion Robinson Cano, will be announced Monday night.

Beltran, 35, is second in the NL with 20 homers. Despite 322 career homers, this will be his first appearance in a Derby by Beltran. Gonzalez, 26, is also in his first Home Run Derby. He has 17 homers, tied for fourth in the NL. Stanton, 22, has perhaps the most pure power in the big leagues. He has 19 home runs, good for third in the NL and will also be in his first Home Run Derby.

Kemp, meanwhile, is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, playing in just two of the team's last 45 games. He has said he plans on returning to the Dodgers' lineup in the team's first game back after the All-Star break. He has 12 home runs, but none since April 30. He participated in the last year's derby in Phoenix.

Kemp told Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times (via Twitter), "I don't think I'm going to be able to play in [the All-Star Game]."
