Tim Lincecum suffers worst start of career

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

OK, so maybe he isn't back. After back-to-back promising outings, Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum went out and had the worst start of his big-league career.

The Nationals roughed Lincecum up for nine hits and seven earned runs in just 3 1/3 innings in Washington Tuesday night. Those nine hits included four doubles and one home run. Lincecum walked two and struck out two.

In Lincecum's career, he had only allowed at least six earned runs in five innings or less seven times before Tuesday night. The two worst game scores:

April 11, 2012: 2 1/3 innings, eight hits, six earned runs. Two doubles and two triples, too. So this one was pretty bad, but I'd still pick Tuesday's outing as worse because the April 11th outing was in the thin air of Colorado.

June 11, 2011: Four innings, seven hits, seven earned runs, four walks and one strikeout. Three doubles and four singles were the hits, so Tuesday was definitely worse.

Lincecum is now 3-9 with a 6.08 ERA on the season and the Giants are 4-13 in Lincecum's starts. They are 41-23 when anyone else starts.
