Video: Zack Greinke ejected in first inning for spiking ball

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

Did Milwaukee's Zack Greinke deserve to be tossed for spiking the ball in the first inning of Saturday's game against the Astros? Judge for yourself ...

As Brian McTaggart of MLB.com notes, Greinke insisted his anger was directed at himself for being late to cover the bag. Sure, Greinke doesn't need to throw the ball out of frustration, but first base umpire Sam Holbrook should also toughen up his apparently delicate sensibilities.

As others have noted, how is what Greinke did substantively different from a runner who slams his helmet to the ground after a bang-bang play at first or a hitter who ritually abuses his bat after an infield pop-up? Unless there's more to the story, this seems like a very silly decision on Holbrook's part.
