Alexi Ogando likely headed back to Ranger rotation

Now that Colby Lewis is facing Tommy John surgery, the Rangers are in need of rotation help. While a deadline deal remains a possibility, it appears they're looking at internal solutions for the time being. That internal solution is Alexi Ogando.

In Friday night's loss to the White Sox, the 28-year-old right-hander threw 44 pitches across 2.2 innings, and now Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers are indeed stretching out Ogando, likely with an eye toward returning him to the rotation.

Ogando, who missed more than a month with a groin strain, has a 3.05 ERA in 41.1 innings this season. For his career, Ogando has a 3.49 ERA and a 2.93 K/BB ratio in 170.0 innings a starter and a 2.20 ERA and 2.93 K/BB ratio in 82.0 innings as a reliever. So there's certainly reason to believe he can thrive in the rotation, especially as "stop-gaps" go.
