Dodgers acquire Joe Blanton from Phillies

The Dodgers are at it again. The end of the non-waiver period hasn't put a stop to GM Ned Colletti, as he's now acquired right-hander Joe Blanton from the Phillies.

On the season, Blanton has a 4.59 ERA in 133.1 innings pitched. Presently, he leads the NL in home runs allowed, so perhaps getting out of Citizen's Bank Park and into pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium will improve his fortunes. The 31-year-old is owed the balance of an $8.5-million contract for this season, and he's eligible for free agency this winter.

In return the Phillies will receive a player to be named or cash considerations.

Blaton will serve in the fifth spot of the Dodgers' rotation and his arrival came at an opportune time as Ted Lilly was scratched from his schedued rehab start on Friday.

Blaton has appeared in the playoffs in each of the last four seasons with the Phillies and with the A's in 2006.

"He's a strike-thrower for sure, and a guy with experience pitching down the stretch," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told the Associated Press. "He's pitched in a tough city like Philadelphia and pitched them to a World Series, so he brings us a quality guy. You want to keep getting better, and this is a move that makes us a little bit better because it gives our staff a little more depth. He's going to be a good addition for us."

Blanton had been rumored to be on the trading block leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline, but stayed put in Philadelphia, despite the fire sale by the Phillies.

"It was a little bit of a shock, especially since the trade deadline had passed," Blanton told the AP. "But when you're in trade rumors, you've got to be ready to do whatever. And I was happy if I stayed. At the same time, it will be a new thing, a new adventure to go.

"And that's always fun."
