Roy Oswalt unhappy with relief role

Roy Oswalt's forced transition to the Rangers' bullpen got off to an awkward start, so it's little surprise that the veteran right-hander isn't happy about his new role. "I'm a starter," Oswalt told Jeff Wilson of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. "I'm not really a bullpen guy."

Oswalt went on to say: "Well, I mean we're 4-2 in the games I started. I guess I should've been 6-0. Two bad ones and won four of them so ... I don't know. We'll see how it goes."

Oswalt is correct that the Rangers are 4-2 in games in which he's started. However, he's overstating his contributions just a bit. In two starts, Oswalt abolutely blew up and gave his team no chance to win, in three starts he pitched well, and in his one other start -- which the Rangers won -- have gave up five runs on 13 hits in 6.0 innings. So he's pitched well enough to win in half his starts, and he was bailed out by his offense in one other.

Yes, it's bound to be frustrating for an accomplished starter like Oswalt, who probably assumed he was being signed to be the rotation savior for Texas, to be jettisoned to the bullpen. But the fact remains that he hasn't pitched well this season. The simple reality is that if you don't do your job half the time you take the mound, then you're not going to be in the rotation for every long. Even if your name is Roy Oswalt.
