Nationals add Cesar Izturis, Brewers call up Jean Segura

By C. Trent Rosecrans | Blogger

With Mark DeRosa put on the disabled list with a groin injury and Ian Desmond on the disabled list with an oblique injury, the Nationals added to their infield depth on Monday by claiming infielder Cesar Izturis off waivers from the Brewers.

Izturis, 32, played in 57 games for the Brewers this season, hitting .235/.248/.333, while playing all four infield spots.

Danny Espinosa and Steve Lombardozzi played shortstop and second base, respectively, for all four games of the Nationals' series against the Marlins. Washington designated Triple-A reliever Atahualpa Severino for assignment to make room for Izturis on their 40-man roster.

Meanwhile, the Brewers called up 22-year-old shortstop Jean Segura, who was part of the deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Angels. Segura played in 102 games at Double-A, hitting .304/.358/.413 with seven home runs. He played eight games for the Brewers' Huntsville squad.
