The Blue Jays already had the misfortune of playing an unbalanced schedule in the remorseless American League East, and then the pitching injuries hit. At present, the last-place Jays have nine hurlers on the disabled list. Of those nine hurlers, two will go under the knife on the same day by the same surgeon.
Although the precise order of Dr. James Andrews's Thursday schedule of appointments isn't known, the Jays have announced that right-hander Drew Hutchinson will undergo Tommy John surgery on that day. Hutchinson's procedure will occur hours before or after Dr. Andrews performs arthroscopic shoulder surgery on fellow Toronto right-hander Dustin McGowan.
McGowan's time-table for a possible return isn't known, while Hutchinson will miss roughly the next calendar year.
Official nickname of the 2012 Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff: "Deep End of the Risk Pool."
