Dale Sveum would be 'surprised' if Matt Garza pitches again in 2012

Cubs manager Dale Sveum, during the course of an interview with WGN radio in Chicago, was asked about the status of injured right-hander Matt Garza. According to Sveum, he would be "surprised"if Garza pitched again in 2012. Garza hasn't taken the mound since July 21 because of a triceps injury and subsequent stress reaction within his elbow.

In 103.2 innings this season, Garza has an ERA of 3.91 with 96 strikeouts and 32 walks. For his career, Garza has a 3.84 ERA in 1,027.0 innings.

Leading up to the July 31 non-waiver deadline, there was widespread speculation that Garza would be dealt, but his injury status made such a move impossible. The succeeding speculation was that Garza would be traded over the winter, but if he is in fact unable to pitch again this season, then Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer may have trouble making that happen.

On the upside, Garza, at age 28, is still young enough and effective enough to be a key part of the next relevant Cubs team, provided, of course, that they retain him beyond the 2013 season.
