CC Sabathia: 'I'm pitching on Friday'

Yankees ace CC Sabathia, who's presently on the disabled list with an ailing left elbow, enjoyed a pain-free bullpen session on Saturday. He's slated to throw again on Tuesday, but Sabathia is already eyeing Friday in Cleveland, when he's eligible to be activated. "I'm pitching on Friday," Sabathia told Jack Curry of the YES Network.

Sabathia never wanted to go on the disabled list in the first place, so it's not surprising that he wants to return to the mound as soon as possible.

Right now, David Phelps is penciled in for the Friday start, but, barring setback on Tuesday, it seems highly likely that Sabathia will replace him.

The Yankees, with their relatively comfy lead in the AL East (at this writing, CoolStandings.com gives them an 88.0% chance of taking the flag), have the luxury of being conservative with Sabathia, but they were already taking the conservative tack by deactivating him following his last start on Aug. 9.

On the season, the 32-year-old Sabathia has a 3.56 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 141.2 innings. He has, however, struggled with his consistency in the second half, so perhaps the time off will serve him well.
