The Pirates have placed outfielder Starling Marte on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain, the Pirates announced Sunday. Outfielder Jose Tabata has been recalled in a corresponding move.
Marte, a 23-year-old rookie, is hitting .253/.287/.421 with four homers, four stolen bases, two triples, eight runs and 10 RBI in 101 plate appearances.
The injury to the highly-touted prospect gives Tabata a shot at regaining traction to his big-league career. Tabata proved to be pretty good at getting on base and stealing bases in 2010 and 2011, but fizzled this season. In 72 games before his demotion to Triple-A, Tabata was hitting .230/.295/.341 and had been successful on only eight of his 17 stolen base attempts.
Tabata, 24, has been with Triple-A Indianapolis since July 1, where he's hit .297/.353/.354 with five stolen bases.
The Pirates enter Sunday with a half-game lead for the second wild-card spot.
