Prelude to a wider shake-up? Maybe. The Red Sox have fired pitching coach Bob McClure and replaced him with Randy Niemann, who'll fill the role for at least the balance of the 2012 season, the team has announced.

McClure, 60, joined the Red Sox organization as a special assignment scout/instructor in November 2011 and was named as pitching coach last December. The 56-year-old Niemann, meanwhile, has served as assistant pitching coach this season, his first as part of the Red Sox organization. He previously spent 24 seasons with the Mets, including three stints as bullpen coach.

This season, the Red Sox rank 11th in the 14-team AL in ERA.
