Reds minor-leaguer Billy Hamilton stole his 146th base of the season on Tuesday, breaking the record for the most steals in a season, set by Vince Coleman in 1983.

Hamilton, 21, recorded his first four-steal game at Double-A Pensacola, giving him 147 steals on the season. He didn't steal a base in the second game of the doubleheader. Coleman stole 145 bases at Class A Macon in 1983, despite missing 30 games with a broken hand. He played in 113 games that season. Hamilton's played in 121 games this season after Tuesday's doubleheader.

Hamilton stole 104 bases in 82 games for high-Class A Bakersfield before being promoted to Double-A Pensacola after the Futures Game in Kansas City in July. In his 38th game for the Blue Wahoos, Hamilton walked in the first inning and after going to second on an error from Montgomery pitcher Kyle Lobstein, Hamilton stole third for his 40th stolen base since being promoted to Pensacola and 144th overall. Then after a two-out single in the third, he stole second to tie the record and third to break it. With his mother in the stands, the team gave him the base to commemorate the record.

Here's video of the steal:

Hamilton stole another base in the eighth inning, giving him four on the night and 147 for the season. He finished 1 for 2 with two walks and four stolen bases in the first game of the doubleheader, a 4-2 loss to Montgomery in 8 innings (minor-league doubleheaders are 7-inning games).

In the second game, Hamilton went 0 for 2 with a walk and was picked off first. After the second game of the doubleheader, Hamilton's hitting .317/.417/.433 on the season and .301/.425/.419 at Double-A. He's been caught stealing 33 times. Hamilton stole 103 bases for low-Class A Dayton last season.

Coleman led the majors in stolen bases in each of his first six seasons in the majors, including a career-high 110 as a rookie in 1985. He finished his 13-year career with 752 stolen bases.

Hamilton's 147 stolen bases are now the most by any player in a professional baseball season. Rickey Henderson's 130 steals in 1982 is the big league record.
