Cardinals move Lance Lynn to bullpen

The surging Cardinals have moved the struggling Lance Lynn to the bullpen and replaced him in the rotation with Joe Kelly, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 25-year-old Lynn, who made the NL All-Star Team earlier this season, has a 3.93 ERA in 144.1 innings this season. However, he's struggled badly of late (5.23 ERA in the second half, 6.56 ERA for August), which raises concerns that Lynn has hit a wall. The burly right-hander lasted just 2.0 innings in Friday's win over the Reds. Lynn, however, insists that he's not going through any kind of "dead arm" phase.

Kelly, age 23, has posted a 3.26 ERA in 77.1 innings at the major-league level this season. Of 14 appearances for St. Louis, 12 have been starts.

Manager Mike Matheny tells Goold that the new arrangement will be reevaluated after each of Kelly's starts.
