Phillies lefty Cliff Lee was cruising until the seventh inning, when Jayson Werth singled to lead off the inning and LaRoche followed with what he thought was his 24th home run of the season. Only problem was it wasn't a home run and no umpire signaled home run -- but LaRoche and Werth started trotting anyway and LaRoche was tagged out by Jimmy Rollins between second and third after the ball bounced off the railing in right-center. Meanwhile, Werth, who was on second, didn't score on the play, only reaching third.
Watch it here:
Werth did score when Tyler Moore followed with a double for what would be the team's only run of the day.
Afterward, beat reporters reported a closed-door meeting between manager Davey Johnson and general manager Mike Rizzo, which was described as both "lively," "animated," and "loud." Johnson said there was no team meeting. Both LaRoche and Werth took responsibility for the gaffe.
Davey on the HR that wasn't: "My two veteran players took it for granted that the ball was a HR... You can't do that. You just can't do it."— Amanda Comak (@acomak) August 26, 2012
