Quote of the night: Joey Votto on his absence

Quote of the night: Joey Votto on his absence

In his first rehab game, Joey Votto didn't connect on any pitches, but he did connect on a punchline.

Playing for Class A Dayton on Tuesday, Votto walked in his first at-bat and struck out in his second before leaving the game. After Votto's strikeout in the fourth, the Dragons' Yorman Rodriguez and Juan Silva followed with back-to-back homers and the Dragons beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 9-3.

According to Tom Archdeacon of the Dayton Daily News, when asked about his short outing, Votto deadpanned:

"Like with the Reds, I noticed when I leave games the team just starts playing really, really well. So that was me being a good teammate and getting the heck out of there and letting someone else take over."

The Reds are 29-14 since the former MVP went on the DL last month with a knee injury. He's expected to play again tonight in Dayton and then join the Reds in Houston this weekend.

Meanwhile in Dayton, 9,198 showed up at Fifth Third Field to see the Dragons and Votto. But that wasn't exactly a bump in attendance for Dayton -- it was the 909th straight sellout for the Dragons, who own professional sports' record for most consecutive sellouts.

Votto played 171 games for the Dragons in 2003 and 2004.

"This is one of the most special places for baseball in all of the minor leagues and maybe all of professional baseball," Votto said on Tuesday (Dayton Daily News). "I continue to be astonished at how good the conditions are here. The grounds crew does an amazing job and the fan base turns out in droves. It's a great place to play."
