Graphic: Keeping the batting title from Melky Cabrera

By C. Trent Rosecrans | Blogger

Melky Cabrera already has an All-Star MVP and a 50-game suspension under his belt for 2012 and it appears he could add a batting title.

There are plenty of people out there who wouldn't like to see that, and for them, Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen is your white knight. McCutchen is currently second to Cabrera for the batting crown. What will he need to do to keep it from Cabrera? Our very own David Fung has this graphic breaking it down what McCutchen, Joey Votto and Buster Posey would need to do the rest of the season to overtake the suspended Cabrera.

Votto is scheduled to rejoin the Reds on Saturday. He'd likely fall short of the needed plate appearances to qualify, however, the rule that allows Cabrera to qualify -- adding hitless at-bats to his total -- could also benefit the Reds first baseman. Here, we assumed an 0-for-23 addition to Votto's numbers to get him qualified. This, of course, is just an estimation based on Votto returning on Saturday.
