Sayeth coolstandings.com, the Phillies have a microscopic 0.1% chance of making the postseason, so roster comings and goings matter little in the grand scheme of the 2012 season.
With that said, duty compels us to note that catcher Carlos Ruiz, who before succumbing to plantar fasciitis more than month ago was putting up MVP-caliber numbers, is back from the disabled list. The 33-year-old backstop is batting .335/.399/.559 on the year with 14 homers and 28 doubles.
The problem -- the good kind of problem -- for manager Charlie Manuel is that Ruiz's replacement, Erik Kratz, has been raking in Ruiz's absence.
At the same time, the Phillies have placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the DL because of lingering back problems. The move is retroactive to Sept. 5, so it's possible that Polanco could see some action before the season ends. On the year, the 36-year-old Polanco is hitting a disappointing .257/.302/.327.
