Athletics starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy had to undergo surgery earlier this week. He suffered an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture Wednesday night after being hit in the head by a liner off the bat of Angels infielder Erick Aybar.
For those either not on Twitter or not following McCarthy, he's a great personality and it shows when he tweets. Saturday morning, he was evidently feeling good enough to shoot out a few tweets. One was an Arrested Development reference and the other:
The good news in all of this, is that I set up my fantasy lineups beforehand. So there shall be no excuses at this point.— Brandon McCarthy (@BMcCarthy32) September 8, 2012
He's talking fantasy football and making pop culture references. This is great news, especially considering he was in a "life-threatening situation" just two days ago. It's good to know that -- much like that of his wife -- his sense of humor is still intact. Hopefully he'll be able to join his teammates in the dugout at some point before the end of the season.
McCarthy, 29, is 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 111 innings this season. In light of the life-threatening injury, he is not expected to pitch again this season.
