As our rumors blogger Jack Moore notes, anyone taking action on the Yankees missing the playoffs could make some serious profit. The thought of the Yankees missing the playoffs is attractive to many, so they might take those 5-1 odds and hope to get the double payday of the schadenfreude of the Yankees missing the playoffs and making some money at the same time. But our resident math expert warns you should watch out. Using coolstandings.com's odds of 86.3 percent chance of the Yankees making the playoffs, your expected value is .137 times 600 (the initial $100 plus $500 from winning), equals $82.20, so you'd lose $17.80 on every $100 you put on that bet. That, people, is why the places in Las Vegas are so fancy, they make their money in the end.
