Stat of the Night: David Wright's doubles

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

In David Wright's third at-bat Friday night, he doubled. Again. It was his second double of the night and 40th of the season. This marked the first time the Mets third baseman has racked up 40 doubles in a season since 2008, but that's not what makes this the stat of the night.

What does? Wright now has five seasons with at least 40 doubles. Every other hitter in Mets history has combined for just six seasons of 40 doubles (Via Mark Simon of ESPN New York).

Wright now has 321 career doubles for the Mets. Second in franchise history is Ed Kranepool with 225. Wright also has three of the top four single-season doubles totals (all 42, in 2005, 2007 and 2008). The franchise record is 44 (Bernard Gilkey, 1996). The Mets have just under three weeks left in the season, so Wright has a good shot at getting the club record.

Still, having five of the franchise's top 11 doubles seasons is a great feat, especially for a man who doesn't turn 30 until December.
