Derek Jeter doesn't dismiss the notion he could finish his career with a different team

Derek Jeter wearing anything but pinstripes seems impossible -- but Jeter says there's a possibility he could end his career somewhere other than New York.

In an interview with ESPN's Rick Reilly (via the New York Daily News), Jeter was asked if he could see himself with a different team at the end of his career, like Peyton Manning.

"Well, if I wanted to keep playing, yes," Jeter said. "It's a business. People forget that."

Jeter signed a three-year, $51 million contract before the 2011 season that most assumed would be Jeter's last. But this season, at 38, Jeter is having a fantastic season, hitting .322/.366/.443 with 15 home runs. All those marks are his best since 2009, when he finished third in MVP voting as a 35-year-old.

Two years ago it seemed impossible Jeter would go anywhere else, despite the rumored contentious negotiations between Jeter's agents and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. The Yankees have an $8 million option on Jeter for the 2014 season. That option could be $11.5 million if he finishes in the top six of MVP voting or wins a Silver Slugger this season -- either of which isn't out of the question. Jeter will turn 40 during the 2014 season, and if he still believes he can play shortstop at an elite level, Cashman may not trust that spot in the infield to a 40-year-old. At that point, it may come down to what Jeter wants more -- to be a Yankee or a to be a shortstop.
