Cubs All-Star Bryan LaHair designated for assignment

Bryan LaHair was one of the best stories at the All-Star Game in Kansas City this past season, getting off to a hot start and ending up as an All-Star. On Tuesday, the Cubs announced they had designated him for assignment.

LaHair hit .286/.364/.519 with 14 home runs in the first half of the season and .202/.269/.303 with two home runs after his trip to Kansas City. The Cubs also called up Anthony Rizzo at the end of June and took over the everyday duties at first base, moving LaHair to right field.

There is apparently interest in LaHair in Japan, so this move could be freeing him up to go overseas. LaHair had played nine seasons in the minors and always put up good numbers there, but came into 2012 having played just 65 games in the big leagues.

Overall in 2012, he hit .259/.334/.450 with 16 home runs and 40 RBI in 130 games for the Cubs. LaHair turned 30 earlier this month.
