Mets shopping R.A. Dickey

Now that the Mets have locked up David Wright, all Metropolitan eyes are upon reigning NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey, whose contract is up after next season. To the end of clarifying Dickey's status, CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports that the Mets are actively shopping the knuckleballer and in return are seeking help in the outfield and behind the plate. ESPN.com's Jayson Stark adds that the Rangers and Royals are perceived as the "most logical fits."

Dickey's excellence in 2012 is beyond dispute. But what's his future profile? Needless to say, there aren't many comparables for a knuckleball specialist who throws in the 80s and has a breakout season at age 37 (he's now 38). Perhaps it's that uncertainty -- combined with the Mets' need to improve their base of young talent, and lack of contending hopes in the here and now -- that's led us to this point.

It should go without saying that if Dickey's recent success is sustainable, he'll be quite an addition.
