Report: Yankees after Kevin Youkilis?

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

Would anything raise the hackles of Red Sox Nation quite like the sight of Kevin Youkilis in pinstripes? If the report of YES Network's Jack Curry is any guide, then the Yankees may indeed be looking to sign the old Boston warhorse. According to Curry, they've already reached out to Youkilis's agent. Given that YES Network is in some ways the Yankees' house organ, there's probably something to this.

The Yanks will of course be without Alex Rodriguez for a good chunk of the 2013 season, and that has them looking for short-commitment solutions at third base. Curry notes in his tweet that Youkilis is willing to consider a one-year pact, provided the money is good. Needless to say, the Yankees -- even in cost-cutting mode -- are capable of making a one-year sojourn in the Bronx worth his while.

Defensively, Youkilis is merely adequate at third these days, and he's past his prime at the plate. Still, the 33-year-old is coming off a season in which he hit a combined .236/.346/.425 with 19 homers for the Red Sox and White Sox. That's decent production as stop-gap measures go. Also worth noting is that he improved substantially after getting out of dyspeptic Boston.

While incumbent (and fellow free agent) Eric Chavez probably has more upside with the bat at this stage of their respective careers, Youkilis is certainly more durable. Certainty means something given the likely length of A-Rod's absence.
