Red Sox agree to sign Shane Victorino to three-year, $39M deal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Red Sox have agreed to sign free-agent outfielder Shane Victorino to a three-year, $39 million contract, pending a physical, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Notable here is that Victorino got the exact same deal as Mike Napoli did Monday from the Red Sox.

A two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glover, Victorino declined rather significantly in 2012. The 32-year-old switch hitter hit .255/.321/.383 with 11 homers, 55 RBI, 72 runs and 39 stolen bases last season, with his time split between the Phillies and Dodgers.

Victorino will play right field and likely bat second, between Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia. That will give Boston a speedy top three in the order before power hitters David Ortiz and Mike Napoli.

Earlier Tuesday, Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters that as the Red Sox looked for a right fielder, defense was a major consideration. He said they weren't definitely looking for a prototypical corner outfielder, meaning a power hitter. Instead, they were targeting someone fast enough to cover a lot of ground.

Though he's in decline, Victorino still covers good ground in the outfield and possesses a strong arm. Putting a healthy Ellsbury in center and Victorino in right will surely please the Red Sox's pitching staff even if Victorino isn't the hitter that he was a few years ago.
