Orioles' Manny Machado OK after meningitis scare

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado should be OK for spring training after a scare with meningitis, manager Buck Showalter told reporters at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday.

"Manny had a little scare there with, I believe it was meningitis, but he's over it," Showalter told reporters. "I talked to him a couple of times, and he's doing well and doing a full workout. He's going to go in and get an opportunity to be our third baseman potentially, but he's got to earn it. We've got some other options there. He's not ready to pick up where he left off."

Meningitis is the inflammation of protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord and can be serious, even deadly, if not diagnosed early.

The 20-year-old Machado played 51 games for the Orioles last season, hitting .262/.294/.445 with seven home runs in 202 plate appearances. The third overall pick of the 2010 draft, Machado was one of the game's top prospects but it was still a surprise when the team called him up in August.

A shortstop, Machado had played just two games at shortstop in the minors but was inserted into the starting lineup beside Gold Glove shortstop J.J. Hardy.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Machado declined further comment through a club official.
