Alex Rodriguez not yet ready for hip surgery

Will Alex Rodriguez's absence from the Yankees be longer than originally expected? That's a distinct possibility. Dan Martin of the New York Post reports that A-Rod's planned hip surgery won't take place until the middle of January "at the earliest."

It was originally planned that Rodriguez would undergo the procedure this month, which would have presumably given him time to build up strength in his injured hip. Now that timetable seems in peril.

The prospect of being without Rodriguez for longer than anticipated prompted Yankees GM Brian Cashman to deliver what will surely stand as the quote of the day:

"I know a lot of people have told me they think home runs are bad," Cashman said. "I'm not one of them. Well, those people are going to get a chance to see what it looks like."

The 37-year-old Rodriguez is coming off a season in which he batted .272/.353/.430 with 18 home runs. He's under contract for five more seasons at a minimum total cost of $114 million.
