Cole Hamels had offseason shoulder issue, but Phillies say he's fine

Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels encountered an issue in his left (throwing) shoulder during his offseason throwing program but has since recovered, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

“We shut him down for a couple of weeks, but he's fine now,” Amaro said (via CSNPhilly.com). “He was being proactive more than anything else, which is good. We backed him off and slowed him down, but he's back throwing now and doing fine. He's had no complaints.”

Amaro also told CSNPhilly.com that Hamels had some shoulder discomfort toward the end of the regular season, too, but there's no reason for concern at this point.

It's still over a month until pitchers and catchers report to spring training, so there's plenty of time for Hamels to be in top shape for the 2013 season.

Hamels, who turned 29 last month, went 17-6 with a 3.05 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 216 strikeouts in 215 1/3 innings last season. The three-time All-Star has six years and $137 million left on his contract.
