Phillies sign Delmon Young for one year, $750K

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed free-agent outfielder Delmon Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

“Delmon is an experienced major-league bat who will add some depth to our relatively inexperienced outfield and another layer of competition for playing time there as well,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement released by the Phillies.

Young, 27, hit .267/.296/.411 with 18 homers and 74 RBI last season for the Tigers. In the postseason, he hit .313/.365/.542 with three homers and nine RBI in 13 games, winning the ALCS MVP.

A poor defender, Young played only 226 1/3 innings in the outfield last regular-season, but it appears the Phillies are set to give him a shot at everyday at-bats. Ben Revere is locked in as the center fielder, and otherwise there's Young, Domonic Brown, John Mayberry and Laynce Nix to fill the corners.

UPDATE: Oh boy. This is not a very good idea:
