Earlier this week, we learned the Dodgers and Time Warner agreed to a new landmark local television contract worth upward of $8 billion. The team will launch a Dodgers-branded channel and is expected to announced the deal soon. It's easily the richest television contract in sports history.
Despite this new agreement with Time Warner, the Dodgers have invited Fox to take on a lesser role in the club's broadcast future, according to Bill Shaikin of The Los Angeles Times.
Team ownership was impressed with the non-financial aspects of Fox's proposal. Shaikin says the Dodgers could pitch the idea of offering a handful of games on free local television to Fox, though the two sides have not had any formal discussions since the big deal with Time Warner was struck. The team may also be interested in brokering a national broadcast deal with Fox Sports 1, a soon-to-be-launched ESPN competitor.
Guggenheim Baseball Management purchased the Dodgers from Frank McCourt last spring for $2.15 billion, a deal that was built largely around the upcoming television mega-contract. The club has assumed hundreds of millions of dollars in payroll obligation through trades (Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Hanley Ramirez) and free agency (Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu) over the last six months. Dodger Stadium is also undergoing a nine-figure facelift this winter.
