Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish will undergo right shoulder surgery next week according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. The surgery, which will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, will keep him out of action in spring training. Matthew Stucko of MLB.com first reported the news.

Kalish, 24, is a .243/.293/.351 hitter with four homers and 13 stolen bases in 89 career big-league games. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder last winter, so this will be his second shoulder procedure in about 18 months. Neck and wrist surgeries are part of his lengthy injury history as well.

The Red Sox signed both Jonny Gomes and Shane Victorino this offseason, and Kalish figured to compete with Daniel Nava for a reserve role in camp. Both Gomes and Victorino could use a left-handed platoon partner. Kalish has averaged just 95 games per season since Baseball America ranked him as the game's 96th best prospect prior to 2008.
